Born in 1935, she always lived in a village in the interior of Portugal. Today, she watches the decay of the village where she grew up and where she worked to eat. Like so many other faces spread across the interior of this country, she perceives in practice what we currently call the desertification of the interior.
“Wanting to stop the desertification of the interior is the same as wanting to stop the wind with your hands.”
These places were abandoned in exchange for the modernity promised by cities. This is the face of someone who never left her village, where she raised six children and where she witnessed the death of one.
In a stone house measuring around 30m² with eight people, without electricity or water, the notion of privilege and perseverance is different. My grandparents’ story has been, over the last few years, inspiring and highly motivating for my work, it shows that effort and sacrifice are not objective aspects.
